Today started off nice and relaxed when we got up at 8 AM with a full day ahead of us. The 140 mile ride to Duke was short (for our standards), but mostly on back roads so it took about 4 hours. We really got a scenic tour of southern Virginia and North Carolina.
We got to Duke a little after 12:30 PM and had a little trouble parking the RV. Mom ended up calling the University to find a parking space for buses which we happily pulled into. The parking dilemma left us little time to spare, so we made the quickest seven PB&J and peanutbutter and Fluff sandwiches ever. We were now really pressed for time, as we rushed to
the Undergraduate Admissions Office. I really got a sense of how hot North Carolina is in the summer. Our one-hour air-conditioned information session started at 2 o’clock and we got there just in time for the session. The presenter and Assistant Admissions Director was a Middlebury alum who had been the assistant lacrosse coach at Cornell and who is also good friend of the Chaminade Head Lacrosse Coach, Jack Moran. After the information session, we were shown around the campus by a rising sophomore. The outside to air conditioning ratio was about 60/40 and during our tour, the outside temperature hit 100 degrees. The coolest part of the tour was when we went in a part of the library called the Link and there was a huge television screen featuring the Spain-Chile World Cup game. Duke was a really pretty campus and I liked it better than UVA.
We drove about one hour to reach our campground in Four Oaks, NC – the Smithfield KOA. After we got settled, we hit the pool and then the showers. We had cocktails with home-grown Virginia peanuts which was followed by a late dinner. This is the first time I’ve been to North Carolina and it’s our hottest day so far.
