Day 11: Kill Devil Hills and Roanoke Island

By Conor

On the 11th day of our trip, I woke up sleeping on sand and heard the cry of seagulls and the rolling waves of the ocean; yes, sleeping in a tent is very fun. (Although, to be realistic for the “Unofficial Blog” readers the sand was quite uncomfortable and I heard less seagulls and more the generator of the neighboring RV. Anyway…) Sleeping in the tent also got me and my fellow tent-ers up early to get out of the hot Carolina sun.

We started the day quite early, not even eating breakfast until we reached our hour-long trip’s destination: Kill Devil Hills. (Kitty Hawk was the nearest town to Kill Devil Hills in the days of the Wright Brothers.) We ate a very rushed breakfast and then went into the Kill Devil Hills Visitors Center to listen to a ranger presentation on Wilbur and Orville Wright. After the ranger talk, we toured outside, walking past the location of the first flight and admiring the towering monument to the Wright’s success. Patrick, Bridget, and Molly even flew some kites with many other visitors on the lawn.

After Kill Devil Hills, we headed over to Roanoke Island, the sight of The Lost Colony, for a very hot lunch. Then, Molly, Bridget, and Patrick did a Junior Ranger program as the rest of us basked in the glorious AC of the Visitors Center. Next, we visited a small , earthen-works fort, a replica of the 16th century one. Finally, we said goodbye to the vicious heat of Roanoke Island and listened to the exciting Netherlands-Uruguay game on the ride back to the campground.

Back at the campground, we walked past some deer along the boardwalk to the beach and took some locally bought crab cakes to the beach for dinner. We followed dinner with a couple of (highly competitive) soccer games on the beach and a few rounds of the rating game in the surf until it got too dark to play. That night, Bridget and Molly joined Patrick in the tent, while Matthew and I returned to the soft cushions of the RV.
